AMRI calls for peace and calm in Northern Ireland

The Association of Leaders of Missionary and Religious Congregations of Ireland (AMRI), representing a membership of over 150 Religious Institutes, Societies of Apostolic Life and Lay Missionary Organisations, join others in amplifying calls for peace and calm in Belfast and in other parts of Northern Ireland.

The violence and aggression that terrorises residents of every nationality and religious affiliation in Belfast and its surrounds, is harmful and destructive for everyone living in that community. We all have a right to live in peace and harmony regardless of our creed, colour or origin.

AMRI denounce the specific targeting of individuals and families from migrant communities and reject all forms of racial profiling. As Christians, it is incumbent on us to respect the integrity of every human life and to show welcome to “the stranger” (Matthew 23.35).

AMRI stands in solidarity with faith and community leaders and their responses to restore calm, foster inclusive communities and seek a lasting “peace, for a new understanding of the human person and its inviolable dignity, for a civilization of love” (cf. Magnifica Humanitas, 186).

AMRI also call on all social media platforms to refrain from “fanning the flames of polarisation” (Pope Leo XIV) and seek ways in which to explore and support peaceful collaboration, human dignity and safe neighbourhoods.
