“…Another Sunday of war”

August 24: A Day of Prayer and Reflection for Gaza

Fr Gabriel Romanelli, parish priest of Holy Family Church, the only Catholic Church in Gaza, recently warned that “an evacuation order has been issued for the entire neighbourhood,” as Israel seeks to expand its military offensive in Gaza City. Previously, on 17th July, Holy Family Church was hit by Israeli fire, killing 3 and injuring 11, including Fr Romanelli.

Archbishop Eamon Martin is asking all Catholics to join together for a Day of Prayer and Reflection for Gaza for 24 hours this Sunday, 24 August. He outlines some of the ways in which we can respond on this day, “whether as a parish or in the quiet of your own home:”

  • Attending Mass and offering it for peace in Gaza
  • Spending time in Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament
  • Praying the Rosary for peace and justice
  • Lighting a candle at home or in your parish church
  • Making a small personal sacrifice or act of penance
  • Reaching out to your political representatives to advocate for justice and humanitarian aid
  • Supporting trusted aid organisations bringing relief to Gaza

Also, Fr Romanelli is asking us to support the mission in Gaza by sharing their regular posts across social media and broadcast channels: Instragram @P.Gabriel Romanelli; Facebook P. Gabriel Romanelli or on YouTube @P.GabrielRomanelli

“I renew my heartfelt appeal for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and full respect for international humanitarian law,” he said, noting that “Every human being has an intrinsic dignity bestowed by God Himself” (Pope Leo XIV)
