The success of our 2020 conference showed us that a Zoom event can be just as successful as an in-person event, and the 2022 conference confirmed this. Cognizant of the intergenerational aspect that underpins this event, and respecting safety concerns, the online format allows us to bring the voices of global speakers to share their perspectives leaving a minimal carbon footprint.
This years’ conference, titled: Climate and Biodiversity: Thinking Ecologically, will highlight the relationship between the climate crisis and the biodiversity crisis. Together, with guest speakers and through interactive exercises, we will explore the meaning and importance of thinking ecologically.
The conference is organised by: The Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles (OLA), Society of African Missions (SMA), the Social and Health Education Project (SHEP), Elders for Earth, the North Cathedral and Blackpool Parish Climate Justice Group, St. Anne’s Shandon Justice Group and Eco-UNESCO.
The day is designed to be as interactive as possible within the constraints of Zoom, with both presentations and discussions interspersed with activities.
Chairing the conference are Theresa Rose Sebastian, university student, climate activist and co-founder of the Re-Earth Initiative; and Denise Cahill, Cork Healthy City Co-ordinator.
Aoife Corcoran of the Environmental Research Institute, UCC, will talk about climate change and its impact on eco-systems and biodiversity; Emma Hart, a conservation ecologist, will discuss biodiversity and ecology; James Orr of Friends of the Earth, will explore importance of recognizing rights for our natural world; Abigael Kima and John Hillary Balyejusa will speak about the experience of climate change in Kenya and Uganda; ECO-UNESCO will moderate an intergenerational conversation between Helen O’Dowd of Elders for Earth and Saoirse Exton, a secondary school student from Limerick and UN Climate Advisor; and finally, Catherine Seale-Duggan, Community Water Officer for Cork, will outline what we can do to protect our local waterways.
