On Saturday, April 5th AMRI hosted its first Justice Symposium. The full-day event took place at Marino Institute of Education in Dublin with 40 participants from various religious congregations actively engaged in justice, peace and ecology and organisations including Trócaire, the Irish Red Cross, Irish Refugee Council, Social Justice Ireland and Misean Cara. The focus of the gathering was firstly, to meet and greet each other and to share about the work that we are engaged in. The day provided a space to reflect on the changing local and global landscape and to begin to explore some of the challenges and opportunities of a faith-based response to contemporary issues. In the morning, Lara Kelly from the Dominican Sisters Cabra congregation justice office invited participants to ‘Step into the Doughnut’ and explore the ideas of Doughnut Economics (Kate Raworth) that conceptualises an ecologically safe and socially just space in which humanity can thrive in the 21st century. Critical in this reflection was the importance of collaboration and a unified voice. In this space collaborations between congregations were represented including, Africa Europe Faith and Justice Network Ireland, the SafeBirth4All coalition and the ecumenical initiative, Belonging Without Boundaries.
